The Indiana Department of Education is shifting to an electronic delivery of the Indiana Reading Diagnostic Assessment. IRDA will now be available online and through PDF files for printing your own paper materials. Schools will need to be signed up through IRDA-Online to access the assessment and print paper materials. Each teacher will need a username and password for IRDA-Online. Contact irda@indiana.edu if you need any usernames and passwords.


The Indiana Reading Diagnostic Assessments were developed by the Center for Innovation in Assessment in cooperation with the Indiana Department of Education and Indiana teachers. They are designed specifically to meet Indiana's Academic Standards for Reading and address every one of the skill areas identified by the National Reading Panel as "key skills...to reading achievement."

The Indiana Reading Diagnostic Assessments are a valid and reliable series of informal reading assessments for Grades K-2. They are provided free of charge to Indiana teachers through the Indiana Department of Education.

  • A series of Informal Reading Assessments for Grades K-2.
  • Designed by teachers, tested with teachers, and made for teachers in Indiana
  • Schools may choose to participate in any combination of the three levels:
    Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade
  • Assess a variety of standards including Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Comprehension as well as Concepts about Print
  • Administered three times per year to monitor student progress
  • Administered by paper and scored by teachers
    OR
  • Administered by computer for immediate feeback and intervention

The CIA has determined which Scientifically-Based Reading Research (SBRR) skill areas are assessed in the Indiana Reading Diagnostic Assessments and compiled them into an easy to view chart. IRDA News
  • 11/13/2009 - We will be upgrading our servers on Friday November 13th. All systems will be down from 7:00 PM Friday to 7:30 AM Sunday. You will not be able to access the IRDA-Online site during this time. We apologize for any inconvenience.

  • 8/12/2009 - Indiana University's School of Education will be offering an online course for graduate level credit on the effective use of reading assessments in the classroom. There will be training in using the Indiana Reading Diagnostic Assessments (K-2) or the Informational Text Reading Inventory to shape a Standards-based instructional program.   • 7/30/2009 - The testing window for IRDA-Online Administration 1 is August 24 - December 15, 2009.

  • 7/30/2009 - Story Comprehension is no longer a part of IRDA for Kindergarten and First Grade. With the shift to electronic delivery, copyright permissions for stories are cost prohibitive. The Boat and Fun for One stories are still available for additional comprehension activities through I-LRN on the CIA Website. All reports and materials will reflect this change.

  • 9/6/2007 - The Indiana Reading Diagnostic Assessments Resource and Intervention Guides are available online and downloadable as printable PDF files.


  • 1/25/2007 - Soon you will be able to search for resources related to reading and the Indiana Reading Diagnostic Assessments through I-LRN, our online database for teachers, parents, and administrators. Check back for more information about this exciting new resource.

  • 9/18/2006 - For the new school year the Indiana Reading Assessments have been renamed to the Indiana Reading Diagnostic Assessments. Grade 1 and Grade 2 are now referred to as First Grade and Second Grade. The assessments have been updated for the new school year and Administration 1 for all three grade levels has shipped.

  • 9/22/2005 - Grade 1 and Grade 2 Technical Reports are online and downloadable as PDF files.
